Taylor grew up in Kansas and attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1984. He began his career as a reporter at ''The Kansas City Star'' in 1985.〔(Indianapolis Star names new top editor | Indianapolis Star | indystar.com )〕 In 1991, he and fellow Star reporter Mike McGraw wrote a critical series on the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for which they won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting next year.〔〔 In 1995, Taylor joined the ''Detroit Free Press''. In 2009, Taylor was senior managing editor at the ''Free Press'' when the newspaper's reporters won a Pulitzer Prize for their reporting on the corruption of former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
